The U.S. Naval Research Laboratory awarded Parsons subsidiary Space Ground System Solutions a five-year, $245 million indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract for software development, sustainment, and operations support at the Blossom Point Tracking Facility in Maryland, per the Department of War's June 26 contract announcement. Parsons has supported the site for 30 years; Washington Technology reports SGSS was the sole bidder on the recompete and that the software helps control at least 100 national security satellites.
why it matters
Blossom Point is one of the government's oldest satellite command-and-control sites. The award shows how much of the government's day-to-day space operations still runs through a small set of legacy ground-segment incumbents even as commercial operators expand; a 30-year sole-bidder lock on a recompete is a reminder of how hard these government ground-segment contracts are to break into for newer entrants.
