ESA contracted Spain's EMXYS to build Don Quijote, the first CubeSat designed to land on an asteroid, for its Ramses mission.

ESA announced July 2 that it has contracted Spanish company EMXYS to build Don Quijote, a shoebox-sized CubeSat that will attempt to land on asteroid Apophis as part of ESA's Ramses mission. ESA said the lander will deploy from the main Ramses spacecraft a few kilometers from Apophis before the asteroid's April 13, 2029 close pass by Earth, carrying instruments to study the asteroid's shape, gravity, and magnetic interactions with Earth from its surface.
why it matters
Don Quijote is the first CubeSat ever contracted to operate on an asteroid's surface, a capability with no established commercial supply chain today. For European small-satellite manufacturers, it signals a live procurement track for autonomous deep-space landers beyond the primes that have historically built planetary missions, ahead of Ramses' scheduled spring 2028 launch on a Japanese H3 rocket.
