Tianwen-2 closed to 20km of Kamo'oalewa and sent its first photos, revealing a smaller asteroid than expected.

what happened
China's Tianwen-2 probe reached a distance of 20 kilometers from near-Earth asteroid 2016 HO3 (Kamo'oalewa) and began scientific exploration, CASC and CNSA announced. The probe imaged the asteroid on July 2 after a roughly 400-day, 1-billion-kilometer approach following its May 29, 2025 launch from Xichang, closing from 30,000km on June 7 to 2,000km on June 19 to 20km now. SpaceNews reported the images show the asteroid measuring about 16-20 meters across, smaller than earlier ground-based estimates of 40-100 meters.
why it matters
SpaceNews reported the smaller-than-expected target makes Tianwen-2's planned November 2027 sample-return task harder, per CNSA's own characterization. The rendezvous also demonstrates China's autonomous deep-space navigation and small-body proximity operations, the same technical ground it needs for the mission's second target, main-belt comet 311P, and for any future Chinese asteroid-resource or planetary-defense work.
