Space Force awards Pulse Space $40 million for laser power tech
Pulse Space
Pulse Space won a $40 million Space Force contract to mature laser-based power and data transmission between spacecraft.
what happened
Pulse Space won a $40 million contract from the U.S. Space Force to advance its laser-based technology for transmitting power and data wirelessly between spacecraft, per SpaceNews and SatNews. The Bellevue, Washington startup, founded in 2022, had previously received $1.9 million in Small Business Innovation Research funding and partnered with Scout Space on an earlier laser power-transmission demonstration.
why it matters
It's the largest contract in Pulse Space's history and part of a broader Space Force push to buy commercial laser power-beaming and optical-link technology instead of legacy RF hardware. For satellite operators, wireless power transfer between spacecraft could extend the life of power-constrained missions without adding RF spectrum congestion.
