what happened
NOAA awarded Spire Global $3.7 million to deliver 4,600 daily GNSS radio-occultation profiles plus 1,200 daily profiles with temporal resolution enhancements, and PlanetiQ $2.7 million for 4,200 daily profiles plus 500 daily total electron content tracks, under the Commercial Weather Data Program's Radio Occultation Data Buy II contract, per SpaceNews and Spire's own release. Data delivery runs Sept. 18 through Dec. 1, 2026; Spire says it is the first time NOAA has procured temporal-resolution-enhanced profiles as a distinct deliverable.
why it matters
The awards keep two of NOAA's established commercial radio-occultation suppliers in its operational weather pipeline ahead of a larger $2.35 billion, 10-year IDIQ vehicle NOAA plans to establish later this year for commercial space-based environmental data.
