China postpones Chang'e-7 launch to moon's south pole

China's Manned Space Agency said Aug. 23 that Chang'e-7, a lunar orbiter, lander, rover and mini-hopper bound for the moon's south pole, "does not meet launch conditions" and "cannot take place during the planned window this year," per Xinhua; Ars Technica separately quoted the agency citing the principle of "proceeding prudently and reliably, and ensuring absolute success." The Long March 5 and Chang'e-7 stack had been due to lift off from the Wenchang Space Launch Site as soon as this weekend; Space.com reports the growth of Tropical Depression Narra in the Gulf of Tonkin also contributed, and says some reports point to a launch as soon as September while Xinhua's own report suggests 2027, given the precise Earth-moon alignment the south-pole landing site requires.

Chang'e-7 is China's first attempt to land at the lunar south pole and search for water ice, a target central to the in-situ resource plans commercial lunar-lander and mining ventures are tracking. A slip from this year's window into next year, or later, delays the landing-site data point the mission would set and keeps the Long March 5's Wenchang manifest, including other payloads queued behind it, unsettled.
