what happened

KSAT said August 24 it has opened the first demonstration campaigns for Hyperion, the pathfinder mission for its planned HYPER hybrid RF and optical relay network, per KSAT's own release. NOAA will demonstrate operational communications over HYPER, including bidirectional links and Ka-band payload data relay, and the campaigns also support Phase 1 of the European Space Agency's European Resilience from Space program. The Hyperion satellites, 300-kilogram-class spacecraft carrying optical terminals from Rocket Lab and Sony Space Communications Corp. alongside S-band and Ka-band RF payloads, are targeting a late-2027 launch under an already-signed contract. KSAT vice president of Hyper Edvard Foss told Via Satellite Sept. 3 that KSAT is now selecting a manufacturer and industrial partners for the full operational HYPER constellation, planned as 500- to 700-kilogram satellites deployed in loops of 12 to 16 interconnected spacecraft, with the first loop built where customer demand is densest.

why it matters

HYPER is KSAT's bid to extend its ground-station business into an in-orbit relay network that functions as 'orbiting ground stations,' a similar pitch to commercial relay providers such as Kepler Communications; landing NOAA and ESA as demonstration partners before the network even launches gives KSAT institutional validation it can point to when selling the commercial service, and the manufacturer-selection stage signals the program is moving from pathfinder to build phase.
