what happened

ESA's Draco (Destructive Reentry Assessment Container Object) mission passed its Critical Design Review, authorizing full-scale manufacturing, integration and testing, per European Spaceflight. Draco will carry roughly 200 sensors and four cameras to record its own fragmentation and burn-up during a real atmospheric reentry, feeding ESA's models for predicting how satellites disintegrate; Indra Group, which acquired prime contractor Deimos Space in 2024, is leading development toward a 2027 launch. ESA Draco project manager Stijn Lemmens said the mission passed CDR "in just a year after the last review, keeping the mission on its tight schedule."
