4iG and SpaceX signed Europe's first Starlink Mobile and Sovereign Solutions agreements, launching in Hungary and Albania.
what happened
4iG Group and SpaceX signed two agreements Sept. 2 in Bastrop, Texas, signed by 4iG chairman and CEO Gellert Jaszai and SpaceX president and COO Gwynne Shotwell, per Hungarian Conservative and 4iG's own release. The Starlink Mobile agreement lets 4iG launch direct-to-device satellite connectivity in Hungary and Albania, filling coverage gaps and providing emergency backup where terrestrial networks are limited or down; Starlink Mobile V2, using SpaceX's 2 GHz non-terrestrial-network spectrum rights, is planned to follow with high-speed broadband-to-phone service, including in Montenegro and North Macedonia. The separate Sovereign Solutions agreement covers secure satellite communications for Hungarian government and national-security use. The companies called the agreements the first of their kind in Europe. Via Satellite reported separately that Deutsche Telekom is the first operator to sign for Starlink Mobile V2, which SpaceX plans to deploy across 10 European countries, and that the current-generation Starlink Mobile constellation numbers around 650 satellites, with Shotwell saying the second generation will likely be about ten times that size.

This is SpaceX's first commercial Starlink Mobile direct-to-device launch on the continent, using 4iG as the regional telecom and regulatory partner across Hungary and the Western Balkans; it sets a template other European mobile operators without their own D2D deal will be watched against, and the parallel Sovereign Solutions track gives 4iG a government-security business line alongside its consumer one.
