what happened

ST Engineering iDirect demonstrated a pilot version of its INT3000 user-equipment modem, which supports both 5G NR Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) and DVB-S2X/MRC satellite waveforms in a single device, at the European Space Agency's 5G NTN Forum on September 2. The pilot ran over a satellite simulator connected through iDirect's Intuition ground system, which the company says implements native 5G NR-NTN gNodeB capabilities.

why it matters

The demo targets satellite operators who need to keep existing DVB-based networks running while migrating toward native 5G NTN standards, without deploying separate hardware for each waveform. It is an early, pre-commercial step in the industry push toward interoperable 5G/6G non-terrestrial connectivity that ground-segment vendors and satellite operators will need to support as the NTN standard matures.
