Eutelsat and Tusass launch EU-backed satellite project for Greenland
Eutelsat · Tusass
Eutelsat and Tusass launched an EU- and Denmark-funded project extending OneWeb LEO connectivity to remote Greenland communities.

what happened
Eutelsat said Sept. 7 it will provide OneWeb LEO connectivity in partnership with Tusass, Greenland's national telecom provider, under the Enhanced Satellite Connectivity Project for Greenland, backed by the European Union and the governments of Greenland and Denmark, per Via Satellite. The project launched at Eutelsat's ground station in Greenland with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen and Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in attendance. Per NordiskPost, the EU is contributing 9.1 million euros and Denmark 2 million euros (15 million Danish kroner) to the project, which Tusass CEO Jonas Hasselriis said is expected to raise internet speeds in affected communities from around 6 megabits per second to 15 megabits per second.
why it matters
The deal extends Eutelsat's OneWeb constellation into EU-funded sovereign connectivity infrastructure in the Arctic, a region of growing strategic interest to Europe, and builds on Eutelsat's role as a SpaceRISE partner delivering the EU's IRIS² program. For resellers and government connectivity buyers, it is another data point on European governments routing public funding through Eutelsat/OneWeb rather than non-European LEO providers for sovereign-infrastructure builds.
