Avio completes integration of FD1 rocket demonstrator
Avio finished integrating its FD1 methalox demonstrator ahead of ground testing for a future Sardinia test flight.

what happened
Avio said on Sept. 10, as part of its first-half 2026 financial results, that its FD1 flight demonstrator has been fully integrated and that ground testing is expected to be complete by the end of the year, per European Spaceflight. The 6.3-tonne single-stage vehicle, powered by a single MR10 methalox engine, is being developed under a 181.6 million euro contract funded through Italy's National Recovery and Resilience Plan and is set to fly from the Salto di Quirra test range in Sardinia, reaching about 40 kilometres before coasting to roughly 70 kilometres and testing an 8.5-second in-flight engine restart during descent.
why it matters
FD1 is meant to validate the MR10 engine and in-flight reignition technology Avio plans to use on a future post-Vega E launch vehicle, so a clean ground-test campaign this year keeps that roadmap on schedule for one of Europe's main small-to-medium launch providers.
