UK discloses nearly $40 million in Starlink and Starshield spending
Per Reuters (FOIA): UK defence ministry has spent almost $40 million on SpaceX's Starlink and Starshield satellite services.

what happened
Britain's Ministry of Defence disclosed to Reuters, in response to a freedom of information request, that it has spent about 13 million pounds ($17.6 million) on SpaceX's Starshield service and 16.5 million pounds on Starlink, for a combined total of nearly $40 million. The ministry said it holds about 1,000 Starshield terminals and 500 Starlink terminals; it began using Starlink in mid-2022, added Starshield airtime on existing Starlink terminals in 2024, and bought its first dedicated Starshield terminals in 2025. The ministry said it adopted Starshield after SpaceX mandated that Starlink be used only for morale, welfare, recreation and training purposes.
why it matters
Reuters reports Britain is the first country outside the United States to publicly confirm adopting Starshield, SpaceX's encrypted, military-grade satellite service, for its own defence communications. The disclosure quantifies how reliant a major European ally has become on a single US commercial provider for military satcom, a dependency question already live in European debates over sovereign space capacity.
