Space Force lets SpaceX set its own design for $2.3B network
Space Force set performance targets, not a satellite count, for SpaceX's Space Data Network contract.

what happened
SpaceNews reported that the Space Force set coverage, capacity and throughput performance requirements for SpaceX's $2.3 billion Space Data Network Backbone contract rather than specifying a satellite count or configuration, leaving the design approach to SpaceX. The Space Data Network Backbone is a proliferated low Earth orbit constellation intended to move data between military satellites, sensors and command nodes.
why it matters
A performance-based rather than count-based specification lets SpaceX use its existing Starshield production line and orbital shells to meet the contract however it chooses, an acquisition approach other primes bidding on similar Space Force network contracts will now have to plan around.
