ESA launches EIB-backed financing push for Europe's space economy
ESA's Investor Forum unveiled a Space Debt Catalogue and pointed to an EIB lending facility already financing Italy's space supply chain.

what happened
ESA hosted its Investor Forum 2026 at its Paris headquarters on Sept. 18, bringing together roughly 200 investors, financial institutions, industry leaders, EU institutions and policymakers to discuss financing for Europe's space economy, per ESA's own release. ESA presented a new Space Debt Catalogue, compiled by its Ventures and Financing Office, listing financial institutions and financing options available to European space companies. ESA also cited its EIB Space Lending Facility, whose first agreement, signed with Intesa Sanpaolo in July 2026, combines 150 million euros of EIB funding with bank financing to enable roughly 300 million euros of financing across Italy's space supply chain, per ESA.
why it matters
European space companies have relied heavily on public contracts and equity rounds; a standing debt-financing facility and a catalogue of financing options give commercial suppliers a clearer path to bank debt, a tool that is common in other industrial sectors but has been scarce for space hardware manufacturers in Europe.
