GomSpace joins ESA-funded study for Arctic satellite constellation
GomSpace
GomSpace and partners will study a future Arctic satellite constellation for secure maritime communication under an ESA-funded contract.
what happened
GomSpace, Sternula, London Economics Denmark and Canadian Arctic consultancy PIRC were selected for a six-month, DKK 3.8 million ESA-funded study, running until February 2027, to assess the foundation for a future satellite constellation providing secure digital communication for ships operating in the Arctic, per a GomSpace release. GomSpace's share of the study is DKK 1 million. The study will define user needs, system concepts and commercial models. Denmark has earmarked DKK 12.7 million for the activity across the 2026-2028 ESA budget period, including DKK 9.5 million reserved for a potential follow-on development and demonstration mission.
why it matters
This is a feasibility study, not a committed constellation: the modest funding and the explicit framing as groundwork for "potential follow-on investment" mean any actual Arctic connectivity constellation is still years away and contingent on the study's commercial-model findings and further ESA and national funding decisions.
