ESA advances ECO, Keystone and CryoRad in Earth Explorer 12 pick
ESA narrowed its 12th Earth Explorer science satellite mission down to three concepts advancing to the next development phase.

what happened
ESA's Programme Board for Earth Observation selected three mission concepts, ECO, Keystone and CryoRad, to progress to the next preparatory phase of the agency's twelfth Earth Explorer mission, per ESA's own release. The decision follows a July 2026 User Consultation Meeting that reviewed four candidate concepts; a fourth concept, Hydroterra+, does not advance. One of the three will ultimately be chosen for implementation, targeting a launch in the 2036 timeframe.
why it matters
The shortlist sets the field of contenders for ESA's next dedicated Earth-science satellite, a program that has historically routed downstream instrument, ground-segment and launch-services work to European manufacturers and launch providers once a mission is confirmed for implementation.
