EU states endorse space project that could draw EUR24 billion by 2034
European Union
EU states endorsed a joint space-defense project the Commission says could draw up to EUR24 billion by 2034.
what happened
The European Commission said Sept. 28 that EU member states endorsed five European Defence Projects of Common Interest (EDPCIs) first proposed in July, including one covering space capabilities such as space-based early warning, satellite communications, ISR, space domain awareness and PNT; the endorsement makes the projects eligible for funding under the EUR1.5 billion European Defence Industry Programme, with EUR325 million earmarked to support their setup. Per Commission documentation cited by Defense News, the space project's indicative overall spending under consideration is EUR24 billion by 2034, and the five projects together carry a combined funding ambition of about EUR190 billion through 2036. On average 18 member states participate in each project, and Ukraine is involved in four of the five.
why it matters
A EUR24 billion indicative figure for the space EDPCI, even though not yet committed funding, signals where the EU wants joint defense-industrial investment to flow; European prime contractors and satellite manufacturers positioning for sovereign defense work will be watching how the EUR1.5 billion EDIP budget and this project translate into actual procurement.
