Foundational raises £8.2M pre-seed for satellite laser ranging
Foundational
London startup Foundational raised £8.2 million ($10.8M) pre-seed to automate satellite laser ranging at scale.

what happened
Foundational emerged from stealth with a £8.2 million ($10.8 million) pre-seed round from Inflection, BACKED, Adjacent, Type One Ventures and Final Frontier, which the company says is Europe's largest space-tech pre-seed to date. Founded by CEO Hira Virdee and CTO Dave Gooding, Foundational automates satellite laser ranging (SLR): retroreflectors on client satellites, automated ground stations that fire laser pulses, and software that processes the resulting data for millimetre-level positioning. The company has 16 retroreflectors already in orbit and about 60 more awaiting launch, and plans to build 10-20 ground stations, with its first three or four going live in early 2027.
why it matters
Precise orbit determination is a shared bottleneck for LEO navigation, in-orbit servicing and conjunction-assessment providers, who today rely on GPS or costly dedicated tracking campaigns. A commercial SLR network that scales beyond government observatories gives those operators and resellers an independent, higher-precision positioning option as debris-removal and servicing missions multiply.
