EU SST and US TraCSS publish joint study on sharing collision-warning data
Office of Space Commerce · EU SST
EU SST and the US TraCSS found their conjunction-warning feeds differ sharply in volume, per a joint study presented at AMOS 2026.
what happened
The European Union Space Surveillance and Tracking system (EU SST) and the US Traffic Coordination System for Space (TraCSS), run by the Office of Space Commerce, published a joint study demonstrating operational information exchange between the two space situational awareness systems, presented at the 2026 AMOS Conference, per the Office of Space Commerce. The analysis found TraCSS generated about 45 times more conjunction events than EU SST over the study period, and TraCSS published Conjunction Data Messages for 65% of the 1,432 events EU SST published, a gap the study attributes to EU SST's narrower focus on actionable data from high-priority sources versus TraCSS's more comprehensive screening and distribution approach.
why it matters
Satellite operators pull conjunction warnings from both systems to plan collision-avoidance maneuvers; a large, quantified gap in what each system flags and publishes is a data-quality signal operators doing their own SSA sourcing need to account for, and a step toward the data-exchange standardization TraCSS has been building toward since opening to foreign governments in June.
