India signs Rs 2,563 crore GSAT-7C satellite deal for its air force
NewSpace India Limited
India's defence ministry contracted NewSpace India Limited to build GSAT-7C, the air force's first dedicated comms satellite.

what happened
India's Ministry of Defence signed a Rs 2,563 crore contract with NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), ISRO's commercial arm, for the GSAT-7C communications satellite, part of a broader Rs 4,106 crore set of defence contracts signed Oct. 15 in New Delhi in the presence of A. Anbarasu, Additional Secretary and Director General (Acquisition) in the Department of Defence, per the Tribune and ThePrint. The ministry said the indigenously designed, developed and manufactured satellite will give the Indian Air Force its first dedicated communications satellite, which the IAF had previously lacked, sharing transponder capacity on other satellites with the Navy and Army instead; GSAT-7C is expected to be operational by 2030, with no launch date yet announced.
why it matters
A dedicated, nine-figure-dollar-scale satellite order gives NSIL, ISRO's vehicle for commercial-style contracting, a large near-term manufacturing program and reinforces India's preference for building military satcom capacity domestically rather than buying commercial capacity, a data point for Western and Indian commercial satcom providers weighing how much of India's defense market will stay closed to them.
