Planet wins NASA evaluation task order for Tanager hyperspectral data
NASA will evaluate over 250,000 square kilometers of Planet's Tanager hyperspectral imagery under its commercial data program.
what happened
Planet announced a task order from NASA's Commercial Satellite Data Acquisition (CSDA) program to evaluate its Tanager hyperspectral dataset. NASA will assess both archived and newly tasked Tanager imagery, Level 1C and Level 2A products, covering more than 250,000 square kilometers, to gauge its usefulness for atmospheric composition, biodiversity, hydrology, geology, and rapid-response Earth science. The evaluation follows last month's launch of Tanager-2 and does not carry a stated dollar value.
why it matters
CSDA evaluations are how NASA decides which commercial datasets to buy at scale for the science community, so a favorable result could open a recurring government buyer for Planet's hyperspectral line beyond its initial methane-monitoring pitch. For other hyperspectral operators, it is a reminder that government evaluation, not just technical capability, gates access to NASA's Earth-science budget.
