what happened

SciTec, a Firefly Aerospace subsidiary, said Oct. 28 it reached an operational milestone on the U.S. Space Force's FORGE (Future Operationally Resilient Ground Evolution) system, integrating data from the Space Systems Command's Wide Field of View space vehicle in geostationary orbit to expand FORGE's missile warning and defense coverage. The integration adds overhead persistent infrared data from the GEO sensor into FORGE's existing ingestion of legacy and modernized sensors, per Firefly's own release. SciTec President David Simenc said the system uses AI and machine learning to process data streams "across all orbits in real time." The milestone advances SciTec's $259 million FORGE Enterprise OPIR Solution contract, which the company has held since at least September 2025.

why it matters

FORGE is the Space Force's primary ground architecture for fusing missile-warning sensor data across orbits; each new sensor SciTec successfully ingests demonstrates the open-architecture approach the Space Force is counting on to avoid being locked into any single satellite vendor's data format, a track record that strengthens SciTec's and Firefly's position for future ground-system work.
