Space Force weighs 5-satellite proliferated cislunar constellation for 2029
procurement
The Space Force says it may launch up to 5 seed satellites to cislunar space by late 2029 to shape a future constellation.

what happened
The Space Force said in a November 2 industry notice that it is "notionally interested" in launching up to five satellites to cislunar space as soon as late 2029, with initial operations by 2031, calling them "seed vehicles that will inform the acquisition strategy for a potential future proliferated cislunar constellation," per Air & Space Forces Magazine. The notice did not name payload types but said the satellites need propulsion systems supporting station-keeping and orbital transfers; officials have said they are particularly interested in space domain awareness, PNT and communications in the cislunar regime. The outlet separately reported October 29 that SpaceWERX plans to officially announce a related effort, Cislunar Prime, in December, backed by $30 million for 15 direct-to-Phase-II Small Business Innovation Research contracts worth $2 million each, with proposals solicited in January and contract awards beginning next spring; a further Air & Space Forces Magazine and ExecutiveGov report said the Space Force also plans two separate requests for information seeking commercial cislunar technology and AI autonomy software, per Maj. Gen. Stephen Purdy: "We want rapid deliverable capability. ... I'm not going to pay you R&D funds for this stuff."
why it matters
A concrete 2029 seed-satellite target and the parallel Cislunar Prime SBIR effort give space-domain-awareness, PNT and communications vendors an early signal of how the Space Force intends to buy into cislunar operations, an area officials were told to stay quiet about as recently as January. The emphasis on existing commercial or near-commercial hardware over new R&D favors companies that already have flight-proven cislunar-capable systems.
