Deutsche Telekom CEO says SpaceX needs $200 billion to rival carriers

Per Höttges: SpaceX would need years and roughly $200 billion to build a US network able to compete with incumbent carriers.

what happened
Deutsche Telekom CEO Tim Höttges said on the company's Q3 2026 earnings call on November 5 that SpaceX would need about $200 billion and several years to build a mobile network competitive with T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T, per Light Reading. Höttges said SpaceX's current 79 MHz of low- and midband spectrum is a "dirt track" compared with T-Mobile's 400 MHz "autobahn," and that acquiring a comparable spectrum position would cost triple-digit billions, with another $20 billion to $30 billion needed for towers. Per Reuters, he separately told reporters the market already expects Verizon, AT&T, and Deutsche Telekom to generate less profitability given the coming competition, and that satellite service alone cannot replace terrestrial networks in cities or indoors.
why it matters
Höttges is the most detailed on-record carrier estimate yet of what it would cost SpaceX to go from a direct-to-device add-on to a standalone wireless competitor, and incumbents' own cost math is a data point for anyone pricing Starlink Mobile's buildout timeline or handicapping a T-Mobile sale scenario.
