what happened

ESA published a call Oct. 27 for the second phase of its Boosters for European Space Transportation (BEST) initiative, BEST 2 Flight Demonstrations, seeking industry-led in-flight tests of reusable first-stage booster technology, per European Spaceflight. The call follows a 2024 round that funded ArianeGroup and Isar Aerospace through preliminary design studies (Phases 0/A through B1); ArianeGroup's prior work adapts its MaiaSpace subsidiary's small-launcher first stage into a reusable booster for a future Ariane 6 evolution, and Isar Aerospace's covers a reusable first-stage demonstrator for its Spectrum rocket. ESA has not yet published budget or timeline details for the new call.

why it matters

The call extends ESA's push to give Europe reusable-booster options beyond the long-delayed Themis demonstrator, directly funding two of the continent's most-watched launch programs, MaiaSpace's planned small launcher and Isar's Spectrum, toward actual flight hardware rather than paper studies. Competing reusable-booster vendors and Ariane 6 suppliers now have a concrete near-term funding line to track, even though ESA has not yet disclosed how much money is on the table.
